I had almost forgotten about the old fossil. At such times the conversation usually comes around to the why.
Why do these old fossils keep at it until they drop? I suppose the reasons vary. Ego in some cases - they
don't believe anyone can do better than them and they are somehow saving the country. Or those determined to
destroy it (Feinstein, Hoyer, etc) they hate it so much they will try to their dying breath.
Probably by the time they're in their eighties (late seventies for many given the dissolute living) they no longer
can think clearly and are used by their handlers and the handlers actually answer to the masters. Certainly this is
not the case with Trump as he is as lucid as a fifty year old - probably more so than some - and plays golf regularly,
quite well.
I have a theory about some of them, I don't know how many. When you took the ticket, went to the crossroads, made the
Faustia bargain, whatever - as you approach the end you worry, you fear. Even if you're an avowed atheist (an atheist
isn't necessarily one who doesn't believe in God, some may believe and know quite well what they are doing - as the end
nears and the darkness closes in... you know it's too late but you try to put it off as long as possible. Some years ago
I was watching a documentary about the Sonderkommandos. One of the few survivors was being interviewed - he was fairly
young and the film looked old so I supposed that it was made a short time after the war. He said that people asked him
why he cooperated and he said that the human survival instinct is to do anything, literally as in the literal meaning of
literally,
anything to stay alive just a little longer. How much more would one facing eternal torment do anything
to put if off just a little longer.
Considering how evil these people are and more importantly the harm they have done to so many, actually depriving many of
their lives, it is tempting to enjoy thinking about their mental torment at that time. Actually I would suggest it is quite
natural.

What we used to call the underground economy has grown huge over the past 40 years, and most of it in
the past 20. The amount of gold and silver stashed in small caches by millions of people would astound
those who haven't been paying attention. The amount of cash person-to-person commerce - no taxes
and no record of who has what - is unreal. The parallel economy is a good thing for those who have to
live a more conventional lifestyle. It will always be under attack but it will probably grow until such time as
the government tries to eliminate it. They may well succeed but by that time things will be so broken it
won't matter, The underground economy has the edge there.
